Which Aspect of Rolex Catches Your Attention?
So much is associated with the crown logo at 12 o’clock. When you’re talking about Rolex, the image that first comes to mind varies for everyone. Whether it’s a guy wearing handmade tassel loafers, a linen shirt and a vintage nipple dial GMT-Master or someone in sweatpants rocking a modern-day Daytona on an Oysterflex bracelet, there seems to be a Rolex for a lot of us. Regardless of where the brand stands in your heart, the number of variations from their vintage lineup and the versatility from their modern line might have something to satisfy most taste buds.
With the presence of hype though, it’s worth asking if owning a piece from Rolex aligns with your collecting principles. More importantly, which aspect of the brand catches your attention? Because like it or not, price aside, the presence of hype can seem as a turn-off for some. Anyway, back to the topic, I’m not a Rolex collector and neither am I an expert. But even so, I feel that the brand has more to offer.
Going back to my question, personally, it’s the number of variations available that enable us to learn and discover from their archives that catches my attention. Everything ranging from the dial variants, case materials, hands and indices can be a niche of its own for each individual model. Besides that, it’s the vibe that comes with clean and simple designs from the brand. Credit should be given where it is due as it takes great design to make something simple look great. I mean, look at the Datejust and Oyster Perpetual, there’s a certain charm that comes with them.
I guess to make it simple, contrary to what a lot might think, Rolex isn’t just about social status. It’s one of those brands where diving deeper into the past might lead to a higher level of appreciation for what the brand represents. At the end of the day, there will always be people wearing watches for various intentions. What ever those intentions may be, it’s really up to us to understand the brand a little more before jumping to conclusions. So, what catches your eye when Rolex is the topic of discussion?
