Stick to what you’re used to or try something new?

Have you ever felt like your watch collection is starting to feel a little bland? Or you’re in a state where the pieces in your collection seem different but similar at the same time? I feel you. Although we’re told that watches are often seen as a medium of expression to show who we are deep inside, there’s always a side in everyone that only shows up from time to time. At the end of the day, there’s the inner child in us where we tend to have the desire to express ourselves differently from usual our day-to-day self.

Just like how a diverse plate of nasi kandar excites me, watches are no different. At least to me, a pastel pink MoonSwatch is equally as exciting as a no-nonsense Patek Ellipse. Yes, very different ends of the spectrum, but still, satisfies the taste buds.

That leads to the topic of discussion, what do you often lean towards? Sticking to what you’re used to or constantly seeking for new niches to discover? Because if I’m being honest, it seems to be a challenge for me to step into something unfamiliar in terms of brands and design. As much as getting something very different design wise always sounds appealing, the question involving versatility always kicks in and ends up pushing the initial thought into the ocean. Not to mention, dial or case colors. Take the cute Mission to Venus MoonSwatch for instance, it's great and I love the color scheme, yet the question of whether I'd wear it often always pulls me away from it. As for trying out other brands, knowledge seems to be a personal barrier, especially when it comes to vintage pieces as there are just so much variations to learn about. That aside, part of it may be the level of impulsiveness that doesn’t seem to be as high as it used to. Yup, you heard that right.

Well, if the crave to get something different still hits once in awhile, maybe it’s really time to let loose and explore brands that were never given a chance. After all, we don’t really lose. If it ends up being a mistake, at least we now know what’s for us, right? If you’re feeling the same, what would you do?
